Android Auto - Google Maps, Media & Messaging Review
Android Auto is an assistant app for drivers by Google, joining forces of Google Maps, voice assistance, and third-party apps integration. It’s the only app you need active while driving, so download Android Auto and enjoy the ride!
First of all, it’s your visual and voice driving assistant. You can route your ways from A to B, according to the current weather, traffic, accidents, other factors that can impact routing. The app shows your route on the screen and dubs it with voice commands.
It just takes an Okay Google intro, and the assistant is ready to inquire your calendar and agenda, write letters and text messages, make calls, google news or facts, and so on. It will also speak out reminders from the calendar, alerts from certain apps, and so on.
There are multiple secondary features that a driver will appreciate. It can turn the music on or off, make, accept or decline calls, send messages via various apps. As for messaging, Android Auto is compatible with Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype, Telegram, Kik and other messengers. You can also make voice calls via these services by voicing out a command.
Music is also backed by various third-party apps. In addition to your phone library or Google Music account, you can launch songs or stations from Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, TuneIn, iHeartRadio and dozens of more streaming services. If you prefer audiobooks, you can access those from Google Books or your local files.
Android Auto is designed for using while driving. That is, its buttons and design elements are large, recognizable at a glance. It also relies heavily on voice assistance; but, for obvious reasons, sometimes it can be too noisy in the car for commands to be audible.
It requires Android 5.0 or above to run. If you want to use voice calls or streaming music services while Android Auto is on, you need to have their apps installed and your accounts activated. Still, the app may experience troubles with your voice commands when it’s noisy, and it is too often when you’re driving. The car should also be compatible, and the list includes hundreds of recent models by fifty top vendors.
The app requires stable Internet connection both for updating road status and streaming music and books. If you enter the zone of unstable Internet, the app may fail; cached maps and audios will keep working, but VoIP calls, streaming music, or updating road conditions won’t be available. That’s not an app issue, but a reminder to look around. And a motive to enhance your experience by connecting an external mic with higher sensibility or an antenna that improves cellular connection.
